Metallic World Eaters Rhino

Test models for armies I never complete are a big part of my hobby experience. This World Eaters Rhino is one such model. But the test was successful (in my opinion at least) as this scheme is simple and eye catching.

The idea was to make a scheme that was easy enough to replicate on the infantry, as they are the main part of any self respecting Khorne army. That’s why I chose metallic red.

I got this model second hand, and as you can see, the assembly is not flawless. but the hatches and tracks were not glued, so not all was lost, as I could airbrush those separately to save some time.

How to Paint Metallic Red

This is simple enough process that I have since repeated in many variations.

Start on clean black primer. It’s important that the recesses are black, as we want to keep it for the shadows.

Next, I airbrush Leadbelcher (or any dark silver you like) and leave some black showing to create some shading. I then airbrush an highlight of Shining Silver (or any light silver you like. Shining Silver is the best Army Painter color ever made though, so you should give it a try)

If you were to stop at this point, you’d have a fancy Grey Knight rhino (if it weren’t for all the spikes). All silver with some highlights and shadows.

The final step is one or two thin coats of Blood Angels Red contrast paint (or a Xpress Color, Speedpaint or whatever brand’s alternative) and becasue this color is mostly transparent and I’m applying thin even coats, it keeps the metallic sheen of the silver, as well as all the highlights and shading I did previously.

This is the same technique applied to the Master of Executions, but over light gold instead of silver. The part that sucks with World Eaters is painting trims. So I painted the whole thing gold, shaded it, and then applied contrast to color inside the trims. All that’s missing on this model is either a glowing axe or some blood spatter on it.

This brush-on-contrast is harder on large miniatures than with the airbrush because you need adjustments. It does work, like for this Rampager Knight that was done in a very similar technique.
